The Coffin Hammond House has been waiting more than a century for someone to help tell hers.
For the past sixteen years, Mr. Hammond and I have shared a passion for restoring homes. Every project has taught us something new, but none has captured our hearts quite like this one.
When we first stood in front of this beautiful 1890 home, we didn’t just see peeling paint, worn floors, or years of neglect.
We saw possibility.
We saw remarkable craftsmanship that deserved to be preserved.
Most of all, we saw a home with another century of memories still waiting to be made.
On July 31, 2024, we began one of the greatest adventures of our lives. What followed was one year and one week filled with countless hours of hard work, late nights, careful decisions, and an unwavering commitment to preserving the home’s historic character. Every room, every porch, every garden, and every detail was restored with love and respect for the generations who came before us.
Whenever possible, original features were carefully preserved rather than replaced. We believe historic homes should retain the character and craftsmanship that make them unique, allowing today’s guests to experience the same timeless beauty that has welcomed visitors for well over a century.
Yet restoring this home was never just about paint, woodwork, or architecture.
It was about creating a place where people can slow down.

One of the greatest joys of restoring the Coffin Hammond House has been uncovering the remarkable history hidden within its walls.
As our research continues, we have made a fascinating personal discovery. Angelina’s Mansfield family shares a documented historical connection through the marriage of Sophia Coffin, a member of the renowned Nantucket Coffin family, who married into the Mansfield family in the nineteenth century. While research is ongoing to determine whether Sophia Coffin’s family is directly connected to the Coffin family who once owned this beautiful home in Richland, the discovery has made this restoration feel even more meaningful.
Throughout the restoration, pieces of the home’s story have continued to emerge—from original architectural details and preserved craftsmanship to artifacts discovered during the renovation. One particularly meaningful discovery was three original wooden boards bearing the signature of E. C. Coffin, offering a tangible connection to one of the home’s former owners and adding another chapter to its remarkable history.
We believe historic homes are living storytellers. Every original feature, every family who lived here, and every guest who walks through these doors becomes part of that continuing story.
